Art Card [New]

{before ink}
Art Cards have only one simple rule:  size: 2.5" x 3.5"

An ACEO is "Art Card Edition or Original"

I only make originals because I enjoy the size challenge.

This one is acrylic paint and watercolor and ink on heavy watercolor paper.

Click on the pics to zoom in!

I just finished it last night!

sample calendar page

(c)1988/1992 Ralf Schulze
Sample page of my Crazy Calendar of the previous post.

Please remember to click on the pic to see it enlarged!

Notable is that on December 25th (Christmas Day), Charlie Chaplin and W. C. Fields died on that day.

FYI: I drew the faces and lettering (month and weekday names) all together on same page but on bigger paper, and pasted in the death names.

Calendar 1993

Four years after making the original Calendar I made this one with more Famous Death Dates.

I did it because the days of the week for most months were the same as 1988 (or was it 1989?) I only had to alter January and February because of a leap year thing.

I had fun and spent a lot of time drawing this.  Every day had a different face, no repeats, and from 1 to 3 famous death dates for each day!

I printed up 250 of them and stamped them with a # ( see the zoom-in of the smaller pic of the back cover).   8.5" x 11"  (the address on the back cover is old and useless).

I sold or gave away 249 of them!
I think I had to draw one months worth of new faces for this calendar.

Abstract ACEO Art Card

(c)2011 Ralf Schulze
A new Aceo (art card edition or original)!

I only make originals.  the ONLY rule is 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" (the size of a baseball card)

This one is watercolor, archival ink and color pencil on acid-free watercolor paper.

The Elevator Sun Flowers

(c) 1983 Ralf Schulze
My last year of College, and I took a "Public Arts" class and one assignment was to get a public art actually done, with permission and all.  So I got it to paint the elevator doors in the fine art building with this!

I was going to do the inside doors AND the outside doors of 3 floors, but All I got done was the inside doors.

What you see is 12" x 22" but the whole thing with a lot of writing on the sides and bottom (not in photo) is 20" x 30".

Oh yeah, this is India Ink and Gouache on Illustration Board.

Totem Bronze

(c)1987 Ralf Schulze
One of my earlier bronze welded sculptures. It is about 9" tall and probably weighs 10 lbs because it is solid bronze.

Scraps from the Fine Art Bronze Foundry (Tallix) welded together.

I think it is at my parents place on Long Island.

Center Part of Triptych on Paper

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
This is the center "panel" of a three part drawing set called "Past, Present and Future"  I didn't look in the packed old portfolio completely yet to see if the other parts are there.  But I pulled this out took a picture and here it is.

It is only 26+ years ago that I did it.  So this is the "Present" from the Past!

It is approx 16" x 20" and color pencils on high quality beige paper.

It is slightly curled (from being inside the portfolio so long) and on bottom right is a hole from a thumbtack. . . . oh how wicked and cruel the world can be on old art!

Abstract Expressionism

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
An old art school painting scanned from a photograph 5+years ago and I remember that I tried using Acrylic based caulk in a caulking gun to create the relief and then paint over it with acrylic paint and oil.

Remember the rule: oil covering acrylic is OK. Acrylic paint over oil paint is BAD!

No real title but it was easily 3 feet x 3 feet on some kind if builder's grade paper board that was 1/2" thick.  I pretty sure this was dumped by my parents about 5 years ago. Gone forever!

I still should have the old photograph which I can scan at a higher resolution someday but why bother.

Bison Herd Watercolor Sketch

(c)2011 Ralf Schulze
I just did this watercolor (that incl..some color pencil) today!  It is 6" x 4" just like the postcard (from the 80's) that I tried to emulate!  However I am going for the general texture or pattern and not the details.
Below is the postcard I used.
I gave the set of postcard and Watercolor (in a duo-frame) to my co-worker and friend Sandy Gordon!

New Triptych weirdness New!

Fun new stuff!  but please search back in my blog for triptych and find the previous cool posts.  Here!  and  Here!

I printed the "mirror" of the old basis and used that with ballpoint black and color pencil!

I Ching based painting!

(c)1985 Ralf Schulze
Another old one; this is acrylic and enamel spray paint on stretched canvas and approx 20" x 14"

I was into the I Ching for a while and used the coin method.

I rolled the coins directly on the canvas and put down the hexagram lines all as a process.  That is why some of the green broken lines cover and are covered by the circles (coin landings).

Took the photo in 1987 and scanned it in 2007.  Didn't trim the pic because it is not straight on picture-taking.

I do not know where this is now.

16 March 2011

I took an Old Video I made and Had fun with it!!!!!!

I took the old Homina Solidworks video and added footage and reversed the sound, etc.

It is just as stupid and inane and dumb as the original and I hope you get a laugh or at least a giggle from it.
I made it just for pure fun for me.  ENJOY!

Another Bearded Guys find...

(c) 1983 Ralf Schulze
I just found this within PC files within PC files from the past.
the image is from a scanned photo.  the scan was made in 2007. I never bothered cropping it and I am sure I have the original bad photo somewhere.
If my old brain serves me, the painting is oil, acrylic, and enamel on canvas and even framed (with painted-black wood slats).  Easily 18" x 24" but possibly bigger.  I wish I had it to take a better photo.  Oh well.
near the center as a background landscape, I collaged a nude on paper that I did!

3D Flamin' Continuous Gorilla Sketch

(c) 2006 Ralf Schulze
Just found the sketch  and scanned it of the 3D Flaming continuous Gorilla piece back from a February posting (shown again below)

The Sketch is pencil on 9" x 9" paper!

My Old Tribute To Jasper Johns

(c)1982 Ralf Schulze

One of my old College paintings.  It was fun mixing up the wad of yellow oil paint and going up on a ladder to drop it on the 3 ft. x 3 ft. canvas!

13 March 2011

Quake and Tsunami

(c) 2003 Ralf Schulze

I know, I made this 8 years ago but when I found it in my old portfolio, it immediately jumped out as a painting based on nature's destructive power...and currently the horrible destruction in Japan.
I never really liked this 16" x 20" acrylic paint on paper and don't know why I saved it until now.

12 March 2011

Very 80's Blue Nude

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
From Life drawing class of Robert White's (at SUNY at Stony Brook) that I used to frequent even after I graduated art school.

It is chalk pastels on 14" x 17" gray paper

Fun Quick Experimental Mr. Suburbia Video

I took a short Video I did awhile ago and "Flipped" it.  The original is this (click here to go to Youtube and see it).  I reversed the soundtrack and embellished it.  I mirror-imaged the scenes and also incorporated some odd footage of my daughter stepping on puffball fungi spores in the woods.

Old Bearded Guys Study!

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
Back on Feb 1st I posted the fancy pen and ink version of this [click here] that  is at my parents home on Long Island.

I just found in an old portfolio this study or afterthought of color pencil on black paper.

It is 10.5" x 18" and I just took a quick flash pic of it!

Whereabouts unknown.

College Crayon art!

(c)1982 Ralf Schulze

I remember doing this in the hall outside of the South Campus art studio I shared with Mik Rez!

It is around 4 ft x 5.5 ft, crayon on paper.  I was doing the weird abstract textured shapes in a landscape, even then!
( the brightness in the center is from a flash camera)

STRACT [new art card]

(c)2011 Ralf Schulze

(c)2011 Ralf Schulze

(c)2011 Ralf Schulze
Another ACEO (Art Card Editions & Original) This is an original and the ACEO rule is 2.5" x 3.5"... so just remember that I created it at that size!

It Started as watercolor and then added micro-pen archival ink.  (seriously magnifying reading glasses were required, since my poor eyes are getting old)

"Stract" is the title...

07 March 2011

A Little Ugly Comic Study. . .

Just messin with various Micro pens (archival ink) on 6" x 6" smooth Bristol carstock (acid free).

Experimenting with a checker board type of cross-hatching

A Fine Old Bronze Sculpture of Mine.

(c)1989 Ralf Schulze
I always liked this sculpture, it combined many ideas and styles I had at the time.  But it never seemed quite right, like something was missing.

Anyway it is about 15 inches tall and probably weighs a good 20+ lbs. It is made of welded Bronze Foundry scraps that I welded together.

I do not know where it is right now.

Postcard invitation for a Show I had in Danbury CT

I had a show of most of my sculptures back in 1991 or so.  It wasn't a solo, but it was a large space I shared with another artist who did mostly paintings. It was a private gallery that went out of business soon after.

04 March 2011

Another Oldie!

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
Another old Painting from my ancient past.

It is based on old photo I took of Mik Rez and Gregor when we were at a Long Island South shore beach on a cloudy winter day.

Mik Rez is on the left and Gregor is taking his own photo.

The painting is approx. 16" x 20".  I don't remember if it is oil or acrylic.  I used what some friends call my "signature" or "favorite" colors.

03 March 2011

Old Abstract Landscape

(c)1982 Ralf Schulze
This is what I remember of this painting:

1st - all I have is this digital image which is probably scanned from a photograph or slide that I may or may not have somewhere.

2nd - It is oil paint on stretched canvas and approx 15" x15"

3rd - I don't really know where it is: Possibly in Germany, because I think I gave to my Grandmother many years ago.

That's it.

02 March 2011

Another twist on the Triptych!

Just did this this evening same deal as "Three-In-One Result" post from Feb. 26th  except here I only used the ballpoint pen on the inkjet printed in regular paper.

Read the older posts to get the dirt.  I haven't cut and mounted these to art cards (yet?)

01 March 2011

Gorilla and Newt in the Big Room!

I found the photo that I based my ink and watercolor drawing on way back in 1982. Cool!
