Life Drawings - Practice, practice, practice...

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
At a certain point after I graduated college I often still attended Life drawing class (even though I was not registered for it) with the teacher's blessing [Robert White].
I was at a point where my confidence and technique (or talent) were at their peak.
These two drawings (of the same pose - I moved) were probably done both within 5 minutes.
I was not the type to stay in one place and draw the same image for 20 minutes.  I loved moving around in the back and finding the point of view I liked, and quickly sketching it.
I would not be able to do this now being out of practice for so long.

UNIVERSAL THEME!

I keep looking at this original  15 x 22 inch sized work and like it every time!

It is ink and watercolor and prismacolor pencil on paper.

If you like it, let me know!

Mother Whale Eyeless

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
This is a small postcard sized collage of mine that inexplicably surfaced in Wyoming.

In the 1980's, making fun of Reagan was all the rage in the left-leaning media, and of course I was sucked into that mindset.

Now I am an unabashed Libertarian Conservative.  But I can still enjoy a good goof!  The detail of the Presidential seal is actually funny.

The Title:"Mother Whale Eyeless" is the title of a GREAT song of the same timeframe  by BRIAN ENO.

Old tall thing

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
Just found this in my old studio.
It's about 20" x 10" and acrylic and sharpie on stretched canvas.

I'll try to get a better pic soon.  The flash on this doesn't do it justice.

American Landscape

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
Another old "just around college graduation" piece.

I like this, because it is a vision of the future of my style.

It is approx 18" x 24" (maybe bigger) on stretched canvas and is Acrylic and oil and enamel spray paint.

I have no idea where this is now.

Center Part of Triptych on Paper

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
This is the center "panel" of a three part drawing set called "Past, Present and Future"  I didn't look in the packed old portfolio completely yet to see if the other parts are there.  But I pulled this out took a picture and here it is.

It is only 26+ years ago that I did it.  So this is the "Present" from the Past!

It is approx 16" x 20" and color pencils on high quality beige paper.

It is slightly curled (from being inside the portfolio so long) and on bottom right is a hole from a thumbtack. . . . oh how wicked and cruel the world can be on old art!

Very 80's Blue Nude

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
From Life drawing class of Robert White's (at SUNY at Stony Brook) that I used to frequent even after I graduated art school.

It is chalk pastels on 14" x 17" gray paper

Another Oldie!

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
Another old Painting from my ancient past.

It is based on old photo I took of Mik Rez and Gregor when we were at a Long Island South shore beach on a cloudy winter day.

Mik Rez is on the left and Gregor is taking his own photo.

The painting is approx. 16" x 20".  I don't remember if it is oil or acrylic.  I used what some friends call my "signature" or "favorite" colors.

Red Nude

This one just flew off the pencil.
I was in a groove!
1984 or so.
Stony Brook

Nude on a chair

Spent a bit more time on this one.
Again from around 1984 at Stony Brook.
pencil and acrylic on gray paper

Blue Nude

I did this around 1983-84 when I would sit in on Robert White's life drawing classes at SUNY Stony Brook after I graduated.

I preferred to do quick sketches. I would walk around to find the vantage point I liked best.

Those were the days. . . .

Model: Gina (anyone remember her last name?)

sketched with markers.
