Cool find from 1983

(c) Ralf Schulze
My old friend in Florida sent me this scan of one of my pieces I gave him back around end of college days.
And guess what, it is 8.5 x 11 with acrylic, ink and color pencil!  The size and media I've always been into!

Old drawing from 1982-3.  My parents had it for years.  Mostly color pencils.

Fat Old Sun

(c) Ralf Schulze 1983
I'm surprised I haven't posted this here yet.  I think I found a stash of stuff in a binder that I haven't looked at in 7-8 years.
This is water color and pencil on blank page for a stamp collectors book.
It's about 8.5 x 11.
Title comes from an old Pink Floyd song.

South Campus Stony Brook Art Studio

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
Found a sketch recently of a small area of the Stony Brook University Art Studio I shared with Michal Rezanka at the South Campus Area buildings.
This is pencil on, I think, 11 x 14 sketch book paper.
Two major elements are the Japanese style paper lamp and the bulbous odd ceramic sculpture of mine.   You can see these same elements in a painting I did around the same time HERE!
Also there is a odd fish-thing with a human face made by another student, Roseanna, who had a studio next door.

Life Drawing - Cool odd colors

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
Found an old big sketch pad from College days.
 This one was a keeper.
18 x 24 made with a marker and dry color pastels (white, green and  red)
The pad is a Aquabee Fashion pad using thickish gray Newsprint-style paper.

A Very Vertical Drawing!

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
This was based on a current photo of the time.

It is India ink and watercolor on 11 in. x 30 in. paper.

Yeah, cross-hatching has always been fun for me!

Mother Whale Eye

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
This is another large painting on paper I did my last year at college. It is about 50" x 50"

It has been stored away and moved in a semi rolled up condition for very long and the oil paint makes the paper brittle through the years.

Sepia Nude

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
this was one of those moments when every thing fell into place.  It was just a quick study in a life drawing session. I was using sepia ink, water and some old black ink.

This just poured off of the brush with in 10 minutes

It is approx. 8 x10

framed in a mat, for sale.

Hand On Head

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
This is from a large set of painting/sketches a I did at the end of my college days.

I essentially had some big paper to work with and 3-4 old enamel paints I found in the basement at home (my parent's home) [noxious stuff]   I found a photo from a current Newspaper and then proceeded to paint it Upside Down with the limited pallet I had.
It was fun > I did about 10 of them in a few days, this was one of the better ones.
The paper was huge! Bigger than 3 feet by 4 feet!  I did them in the summer because the chemical smell was over-powering, even in the large painting classroom I used (I had a key!).

Old Large Abstract Painting . . .

(c)1983 G. Tarjan

. . . that didn't turn out that good.
Sure, I spent hours and hours in class working in this, using painting knives and spray paint and even listening to a walkman so loud that the Teacher "scolded" me about it.

Yes it is approx. 68" x 55.5" oil and spray enamel on stretched canvas.  I'm sure that in the end, I left it in the old painting classroom at stony Brook  No real loss.

My old friend took the b&w photo of me in front of it.

James Ensor

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
I painted this while in the last year of college.  I am a big fan of Ensor!  He is the greatest skull painter ever!

I just found this rolled up and stashed away up in my Bainbridge NY barn.

It is a large 30" x 46" oil and acrylic on paper.  It is holding up well for it's age.

I searched all over the internet for the original photograph that I used to paint this and it was nowhere to be found!  It was a black and white photo in an art book at the time.  If anyone finds it let me know!

The Elevator Sun Flowers

(c) 1983 Ralf Schulze
My last year of College, and I took a "Public Arts" class and one assignment was to get a public art actually done, with permission and all.  So I got it to paint the elevator doors in the fine art building with this!

I was going to do the inside doors AND the outside doors of 3 floors, but All I got done was the inside doors.

What you see is 12" x 22" but the whole thing with a lot of writing on the sides and bottom (not in photo) is 20" x 30".

Oh yeah, this is India Ink and Gouache on Illustration Board.

Abstract Expressionism

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
An old art school painting scanned from a photograph 5+years ago and I remember that I tried using Acrylic based caulk in a caulking gun to create the relief and then paint over it with acrylic paint and oil.

Remember the rule: oil covering acrylic is OK. Acrylic paint over oil paint is BAD!

No real title but it was easily 3 feet x 3 feet on some kind if builder's grade paper board that was 1/2" thick.  I pretty sure this was dumped by my parents about 5 years ago. Gone forever!

I still should have the old photograph which I can scan at a higher resolution someday but why bother.

Another Bearded Guys find...

(c) 1983 Ralf Schulze
I just found this within PC files within PC files from the past.
the image is from a scanned photo.  the scan was made in 2007. I never bothered cropping it and I am sure I have the original bad photo somewhere.
If my old brain serves me, the painting is oil, acrylic, and enamel on canvas and even framed (with painted-black wood slats).  Easily 18" x 24" but possibly bigger.  I wish I had it to take a better photo.  Oh well.
near the center as a background landscape, I collaged a nude on paper that I did!

Old Bearded Guys Study!

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
Back on Feb 1st I posted the fancy pen and ink version of this [click here] that  is at my parents home on Long Island.

I just found in an old portfolio this study or afterthought of color pencil on black paper.

It is 10.5" x 18" and I just took a quick flash pic of it!

Old lost Painting

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
I did a series of enamel on paper at the end of my college time.  It was probably the summer and even probably after graduation because I did these in one of the painting Classrooms on the 4th floor. I used very stinky, smelly enamel paint I found in the work shop of my dad's basement.  I made about 8 or 9 of them and took slides of them.

So here is the first.  It is from a photo of me in a sailor suit when I was like 4 yrs old.   The idea was to take a photo, or even a newspaper image, and paint it upside-down with a very limited color pallet (whatever colors I found in my Dad's old enamel paint!).  I literally copied the image upside down quickly. And let the drips happen!

The Paper I used was a good size, something like 4 feet x 3 feet.  Most of the set I have no idea what happened to.
I'll post more of these in the future. look for labels of "large"

Cool Old Abstract Landscape

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
This is an old ink and watercolor that if memory serves me is approx. 9" x 12" on watercolor paper.

But this image is from a old photograph and it is all I got. I have no idea where the original is.

But even then, it shows my "style".  I think.  Abstract images with a landscape composition.

26 June 2010

A fun little artistic history of mine.

The Original big dry pastel work is approx 9 ft x 6 ft (3 meters x 2 meters). I did it in college (1982) on grey theater backdrop paper. I wish I knew where it was now. I showed it in my first solo show on campus at the Student Union Gallery at Stony Brook (that's where the photo of Mik Rez and I was taken).
From that photo (probably in 1983) I drew the picture (image is 10 in. x 13 in.) using india ink, prismacolor pencil highlights and (originally) black marker which has faded through the years showing pinkish/orange/yellow tints...
I just found the drawing a few days ago and had to make 2 scans and meld them together on the computer. Comments welcome!
