Mother Whale Eye

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
This is another large painting on paper I did my last year at college. It is about 50" x 50"

It has been stored away and moved in a semi rolled up condition for very long and the oil paint makes the paper brittle through the years.

Hand On Head

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
This is from a large set of painting/sketches a I did at the end of my college days.

I essentially had some big paper to work with and 3-4 old enamel paints I found in the basement at home (my parent's home) [noxious stuff]   I found a photo from a current Newspaper and then proceeded to paint it Upside Down with the limited pallet I had.
It was fun > I did about 10 of them in a few days, this was one of the better ones.
The paper was huge! Bigger than 3 feet by 4 feet!  I did them in the summer because the chemical smell was over-powering, even in the large painting classroom I used (I had a key!).

Lost Painting

(c) Ralf Schulze
This is an old scan of an old blurry photograph. I'm guessing it is approx 12 x 18 enamel and acrylic on canvas board. Possibly used sharpie too.

I really like it. Got that usual Landscape/Abstract feel and some fun patterning and I like the white painted lines.

I don't even know what year I painted it, I'm guessing in the 1990's.  I wish I knew where it was. I seriously doubt that I painted over it.

Old Large Abstract Painting . . .

(c)1983 G. Tarjan

. . . that didn't turn out that good.
Sure, I spent hours and hours in class working in this, using painting knives and spray paint and even listening to a walkman so loud that the Teacher "scolded" me about it.

Yes it is approx. 68" x 55.5" oil and spray enamel on stretched canvas.  I'm sure that in the end, I left it in the old painting classroom at stony Brook  No real loss.

My old friend took the b&w photo of me in front of it.

Devil in the Details

(c)1985 Ralf Schulze
This is a very recent photo of an old painting.  Taken while up in Bainbridge NY (Easter weekend) at the house I've been trying to sell for less than 70,000 dollars (for the past 3 years!), and I still have a lot of my old art there.
This is an old favorite.

Oil, and Enamel and Sharpie on stretched canvas and framed with white painted pine slats!

It is 36" x 40"

This one is worth the zoom in to see the cool details!

Calm Splats

(c)1985 Ralf Schulze
The perfect combination of luck and control to create these splats was so fun!

And I knew exactly when it was finished!

Oil, acrylic, and enamel spray paint on stretched canvas.  27" x 32"  framed with thin pine slats.

A Painting

(c)1985 Ralf Schulze
On display at my parent's home on Long Island it is oil, acrylic, and enamel spraypaint on canvas approx. 2 ft. x 3 ft. framed.

This is a terrible picture since where the flash bounced back at the camera is where there is cool details of red drips etc.

Next time I'm up there, I'll take better pics!

American Landscape

(c)1984 Ralf Schulze
Another old "just around college graduation" piece.

I like this, because it is a vision of the future of my style.

It is approx 18" x 24" (maybe bigger) on stretched canvas and is Acrylic and oil and enamel spray paint.

I have no idea where this is now.

Abstract Painting

(c)1985 Ralf Schulze
approximately 36"x 36" acrylic, enamel on stretched canvas.

I Ching based painting!

(c)1985 Ralf Schulze
Another old one; this is acrylic and enamel spray paint on stretched canvas and approx 20" x 14"

I was into the I Ching for a while and used the coin method.

I rolled the coins directly on the canvas and put down the hexagram lines all as a process.  That is why some of the green broken lines cover and are covered by the circles (coin landings).

Took the photo in 1987 and scanned it in 2007.  Didn't trim the pic because it is not straight on picture-taking.

I do not know where this is now.

Another Bearded Guys find...

(c) 1983 Ralf Schulze
I just found this within PC files within PC files from the past.
the image is from a scanned photo.  the scan was made in 2007. I never bothered cropping it and I am sure I have the original bad photo somewhere.
If my old brain serves me, the painting is oil, acrylic, and enamel on canvas and even framed (with painted-black wood slats).  Easily 18" x 24" but possibly bigger.  I wish I had it to take a better photo.  Oh well.
near the center as a background landscape, I collaged a nude on paper that I did!

Old lost Painting

(c)1983 Ralf Schulze
I did a series of enamel on paper at the end of my college time.  It was probably the summer and even probably after graduation because I did these in one of the painting Classrooms on the 4th floor. I used very stinky, smelly enamel paint I found in the work shop of my dad's basement.  I made about 8 or 9 of them and took slides of them.

So here is the first.  It is from a photo of me in a sailor suit when I was like 4 yrs old.   The idea was to take a photo, or even a newspaper image, and paint it upside-down with a very limited color pallet (whatever colors I found in my Dad's old enamel paint!).  I literally copied the image upside down quickly. And let the drips happen!

The Paper I used was a good size, something like 4 feet x 3 feet.  Most of the set I have no idea what happened to.
I'll post more of these in the future. look for labels of "large"
